Smart Subsea Completes Barge Repair in Cocos Keeling Islands
In February 2023 Linx, operators of the Cocos Keeling Island Port, contacted Smart Subsea with a requirement to repair the hull plate of the James Capstan barge. The hull required hull plate to be cut out and replaced in multiple locations to remove corroded sections where material thickness was below Class Specifications. The repair was to be fully compliant with Class requirements for repairs in accordance with the International Association of Classification Societies Req No 47 Shipbuilding and Repair Quality Standard. In addition, the barge could not be removed from the water and the repairs would need to be completed with the barge afloat, and we would need to be fully self sufficient.
A plan was established to install cofferdams to the outside of the barge, and then perform the repairs in a dry environment with full penetration welds from the confined space inside of the barge. Smart Subsea contracted Diverse Welding Services to provide consultancy to prepare weld procedures and qualification of welders from their specialist welding team.
The dive system was shipped to Cocos on 1st May, along with cofferdams, welding equipment, repair plates, generator, including every contingency for a project in a remote location.
On 23rd May the 5 Man team departed Perth and mobilised the system onto the barge to commence work.
The work scope was soon found to have increased significantly, with frames still in place and a 20% increase in repairs which became apparent when the hull plate was ultrasonic thickness tested and found to be below specification.
The team dug with the job and despite torrential rain for days, managed to complete all the planned hull repairs, including significant additional work, on time and to an extremely high standard.
The system was packed away and the team departed Cocos Keeling on 6th June. The equipment will arrive back in Perth... one day.

Smart Subsea cuts oil tanker in half.
In February 2023, working under contract to Birdon, Smart Subsea performed work to cut the ex HMAS Sirius into 2 halves for removal and disposal. The work was required to enable the 186m long oil tanker to be removed from the water at the Australian Marine Complex in Henderson utilising the Yargan floating dry dock. With the dry dock only 100m in length, the challenge came to find a way to fit the 186m Sirius onto the dock.
Following extensive planing and preparation works, a dive team began work cutting the hull of the vessel from Port to Starboard using Broco ultrathermic cutting methods. Once the flat hull had been cut through, the Sirius was ballasted down to the seabed before diamond wire cutting was used on the vertical side sections.
After a total of 6 days cutting, the Sirius was in two pieces, and the bow section re-floated and towed tot he floating dock. A few days later the stern section followed suit, and the vessel was out of the water.
Birdon then used excavators and shears to cut the two halves of the vessel into small sections for recycling.
